A Memorable 4th of July Ranch Events and Updates on the Ranch

We hope everyone had a wonderful 4th of July! Katelyn and Colton enjoyed the parade with the 4-H club, Natalie and I got to be spectators (and collect lots of candy!), and Makayla and John rode in the Wellington parade with the Larimer County Sheriff's Posse. It was a bit eventful for Makayla. She normally rides our horse, Coal, who is a fantastic parade horse and always calm. However, he's not been feeling well so she borrowed another horse, Jake, who has a great reputation for his calm temperament as well. As soon as the National Anthem was over and the crowd stated cheering, off loped Jake down the street about a block! Fortunately, a bystander was able to slow him down and settle him. We found out later Jake had a bit of an eventful morning in addition to the parade-- he had a visit from a bear. Aside from that little bit of excitement we all enjoyed the parade and the rest of our day.

Ranch Updates: Silos and Chicken Feed

Nothing like working on the 4th of July! John has been tirelessly working on getting the silo ready for our chicken feed. After a lot of effort, we finished setting up the silos and got the auger running smoothly. This involved getting a new motor and replacing a couple of belts, but it was all worth it. The oats for the fodder are now secure in the silos, ensuring they are staying dry and the animals are staying out of them!

Veterinary Visit for Coal

Earlier this week, we took our horse, Coal, to the vet for a routine procedure to float his teeth. Unfortunately, during the visit, we discovered that Coal has a severe heart murmur. This news was unexpected and not the greatest after celebrating the 4th of July, but we're taking steps to manage his condition. For the next month, we'll be increasing his feed substantially and then re-evaluating his health. Coal is an absolute sweet heart, and we're committed to doing what's best for him.

Makayla's New Skills

On a brighter note, Makayla has been learning video editing, and she's excited to put her new skills to the test for us. It's wonderful to see her enthusiasm and creativity in action. We can't wait to see the amazing videos she will create to showcase our ranch and the hard work we put into it every day.

Fun at the Drive-In

Despite our busy schedule, we made time for some fun by visiting the drive-in movie theater. We had a fantastic time watching "Despicable Me 4" and "Inside Out 2" under the stars. There are a few parallels between our family and Gru's. That just made it that much funnier for us. It was a much-needed break and a perfect way to relax and enjoy some family time. As you can see the girls did a great job packing everything we needed for a comfy movie night!

Lamb Weigh-In and Processing

We also managed to weigh the lambs again, even in the middle of a little rainstorm-- Yay for rain! Our 20 biggest lambs are now marked with a little spot of a special spray paint and ready for processing on July 18.

Thank you for keeping up with our journey. We appreciate your support and look forward to sharing more updates soon.
