Shifting Gears on the Ranch: Updates from Our Pastures

This fall has brought a season of transition on the ranch as we’ve been busy making adjustments to our herd and flock while planning for the future. Here’s what we’ve been up to and what’s coming up.

Changes in the Herd

A few weeks ago, we weaned the calves and completed pregnancy checks for the cows. After careful evaluation, we made the decision to sell most of our cows, keeping just a few key individuals. While it was a tough call, this move will allow us to regroup and create new opportunities for genetics specific to finishing beef on grass. It is always sad to see the cows leave, but we know they will be a blessing to another family.

In the meantime, we’re planning ahead. Our goal is to purchase pairs (cows with calves) next year to rebuild the herd with fresh genetics and strong producers.

Surprisingly, we also welcomed a new calf recently! This cow was likely bred and should have calved last spring with the rest, but lost her calf and rebred. It’s always a joy to see new life on the ranch, and this little one reminds us of the rewards that come with the hard work of ranching.

Beef Production

Our beef program is moving along steadily. We have coming 2-year-olds that will be ready for processing in March or April, with an additional 20 head lined up for the following year. These plans ensure a consistent supply of our high-quality, homegrown beef for you and your family.

Busy Times in the Sheep Flock

On the sheep side, we’ve sold most of our ewes but kept a select few for lambing. We expect our lambing season to begin in January. As I write this I'm reminded that we better start getting the barn ready now. January will be here before we know it.

In the meantime, we have around 20 lambs set for processing in December. Our grass-fed lamb is known for its mild flavor and tenderness, and we’re proud to provide this quality to our customers.

Looking Ahead

This season of change allows us to refocus and fine-tune our operations. By selling a portion of our livestock now, we’re creating space to reinvest in the future, with plans to grow both our cattle herd and sheep flock strategically, and to give the land some rest since it has received minimal moisture this past year.

We’re grateful for your continued support and excited to bring you more of the premium beef and lamb you’ve come to expect from us.

Stay tuned for more updates as we step into this next chapter on the ranch—and as always, thank you for being part of our journey!
